Doing it Wrong, and Loving it

Anonymous asked: Hi Jesse! I'm starting in a college soon, and I'm exited. The thing is, up to this point I have been bullied, basically for all the time I have been in school (it started in the elementary school, calming down in senior high). I have no idea why I was bullied, I'm completely normal person (if it's okay to say it like that..). I have fought with panic disorder because of this, and I'm scared the bullying will start again. Do you have any words of wisdom? Thank you, if you have the time to answer!

In College?! No way - 99% of people in college, especially in your classes will keep to themselves or their own social group. Because unlike a majority of high schools, people pay a great deal of money to go to college - so when they are in class they are there to work (unless they went out partying and are there, but asleep :P).

I’ve found that most assholes who resort to bullying mostly do so in high school and mostly do so because 1. it gets them attention 2. makes them feel better about some depressing aspect of their life 3. most high schools aren’t giant city schools - so everyone knows everyone. And when you’ve grown up with the same people for so long there is a level of comfort - like “oh that’s just steve the jock” or “stupid nerdy john”. And bullies have has years to pick on the same people.

In college that changes. No one knows anyone else. Campuses are huge and classes are taken based on who wants to take them, not 17 year olds being held in essentially “forced daily baby sitting”. So the big bully can no longer act like a dick, because if he messed with the wrong person who knows what will happen.

I know I’m sorta rambling, so i’ll wrap up. I think the idea is that while I know high school is hard - trust me, very few people look back on it fondly - and the ones who do are usually the ones who were the biggest assholes. But once you’re gone from the confines of high school you’ll meet WAY MORE people with your same interests. You’ll get involved more. You’ll lose that anxiety. And more importantly you’ll eventually forget all about high school and go live a happy great life.
