Doing it Wrong, and Loving it

Anonymous asked: Jesse, I feel like I'm going to waste my life because I have NO IDEA what I'm doing when I leave college in a month, kinda scared, dont know why I messaged you but... Any advice? Was the point I was getting at, haha

*puts on thoughtful, not at all comedic glasses*

Well, as you may know the economy has been pretty rough the last few years - finding work is very hard, in fact the LACK of work (having just been let go of my “real job”) is what caused me to sit at home in my boredom and make youtube videos originally.

Unfortunately post college work is hard to find, and most people don’t. I think the statistic is something like 85% of all college grads move home after school ends - why? Cause finding a job is hard, and it sucks and most jobs require internships or other unpaid crap - just to get a foot in the door. The best are the “experience required” jobs. I just wanted to scream “how can I get experience if no one will hire me?!”.

Sadly it was my own damn fault - I thought History and Theater were GREAT choices for double majors. In fact unless you want to teach, or curiate a museum, in the job market no one is really hiring. Science and math… I can not stress how much those types of people are needed. If you are a math person you’ll make a 100 million dollars - the nerdier the better.

Anyway, rambling…

When it comes to advice:

1. Know you’re not alone, everyone is scared after college. And know for the vast majority, the first few years aren’t all “going off to join the workforce, living my life, fun filled adventures”.

2. With the economy, you might have to settle. It sucks, I know, but that’s a fact. You may not get the job you want, but for the moment take the job you need.

3. Don’t have any fantasies about being “like me”. I am a fluke, there are several hundred million youtubers, and I am one of 500ish doing it successfully. Also, remember, I was jobless and so broke I had to move home with my parents for a time before I joined TGS.

4. Never give up on education, I cannot stress (as a former teacher) the value of knowledge. The more you have, the more valuable an asset society sees you as. You may not think it worth it, but in the eyes of employers, an extra line or two on the resume means a ton.

5. Don’t get stressed, you’re college age…

trust me, tons of stuff will happen in the next couple of years and it’s better to be free and young and able to say “I don’t know what I want” now, and explore what you think you want, rather than being tied down.

…anyway, no clue if I answered this question at all, it’s late and Crendor and I were up trying to figure out what the hell pitbulls rap lyrics are about. :P So my mind is a little messy.

But hopefully I helped?
